Background:
Jeffery Gilliam III, lived along Collins Run. Prior to his death Jeffery purchased 100 acres from John Minge which he immediately sold to Talbott Parrish for one dollar. Talbott Parrish, in turn, assumes the debt to Minge.
Thomas Gilliam of the Land Tax Records is Jeffery’s son. Per Wilcox vs. Pearman we know that Thomas left Charles City for Tennessee prior to 1818 and returned around 1820. He disappears from the Personal Property Tax records in 1813.
It is not known who James Gilliam is, who owned seven acres on Collins Run. It is likely James is a near relative of Jeffery as Jeffery’s son, Thomas, names a son James. It does not appear that James is Jeffrey’s brother as Jeffrey’s father’s Will does not mention a son James. It is likely he is a son of Richard, the son of Jeffrey, “the first.” James disappears from the Personal Property Tax records around 1808. His estate is listed in the Land Records in 1816.
It has a been suggested that James, above, who owned seven acres on Collins Run is Dr. James Skelton Gilliam of Prince George, whose Will was probated 7 Nov 1814. While this is possible, James Skelton Gilliam’s Will does not mention a tract on Collins Run in Charles City County and the Gilliams and Drakes of Charles City County, VA has a long history of living along Collins Run.
On additional Gilliam of the Personal Property Tax records is John Gilliam. His first appearance is in 1794 and disappears in 1813. The identity of this John is not known, but it is believed he is the John Gilliam of the estate of Robert Drake who builds a coffin for Robert (1803). It does not appear that he is John, the grandson of Jeffrey Gilliam III, as the timeline would not be possible. Since John’s first appearance in the Tax records is in 1794, that would put his birth around 1773, a mere twenty years or so after Jeffrey Gilliam, Jr.’s birth. It has been posited that this John is the brother of James above, both being sons of Richard. It should be noted that Thomas also named a son John.
